Bats’ Cave

Bats’ Cave

The Bats’ Cave also known in the area as the Big Cave or the Badichii Cave is a monument of nature, as well as a protected area of national interest in Piatra Craiului National Park, located in Brasov county, on the administrative territory of Moeciu commune. The cave is 7.2 km from our guesthouse, a road that can be traveled both by car and on foot.

The cave with an area of 4.80 ha is populated by bat colonies, which were over time researched from a biological point of view by the researchers of the Bucharest Speleology Institute.

The cave is located on the Bran platform, at an altitude of 950 m. The enclosure has a length of 162 m, being modeled in Jurassic limestone. The cave is a warm cave, with moderate humidity and is sprinkled with many limestone formations, with “earth tears” and rooms with differently colored ceilings. A creek full of mud flows through the cave. Although no special equipment is required, a torch being sufficient, it is good to have protective equipment, to avoid dirt and guano traces, bat droppings, justified by the existence of many solitary bats or colonies in the case of the village of Peștera.
